Overdose Prevention Site
(ODP)
Overdose Prevention serves as a first point of contact for those facing homelessness, or anybody who is affected by substance use and does not know where to turn. From these services, we connect community members in need with health and housing resources. The program works to deliver safe and effective harm reduction services to individuals, while mitigating the impact of homelessness and addiction to community members and business partners.
1. HARM REDUCTION: Staff are available from 8:30-4:30, seven days a week, at the back of the 433 Tranquille location to provide harm reduction and education. Additionally, ASK operates a 24/7 vending machine designed by Smart Solutions that delivers harm reduction supplies, as well as digitally provides information about referrals and emergency services.
2. OVERDOSE PREVENTION SITE: Other services offered by ODP include an overdose prevention site (OPS). This site contains an observation room where people can use (injection only) under the supervision of a trained worker. Staff can monitor and intervene, should an overdose occur.
3. NEEDLE PICK-UP: Funded by the City of Kamloops and the Interior Health Authority, ASK operates a highly successful needle pick-up peer support program. This program contributes to the community by sweeping the North Shore corridor and safely disposing of any harm reduction materials. Additionally, ODP continues to run the Needle Pick-Up Hotline where community members can contact ASK to arrange for safe disposal of harm reduction materials.
