Day of Caring: Maverick Participants at Eden’s Way Sanctuary

ASK Wellness Society’s Links to Employment Program, a collaboration with CMHA BC, recently organized a hands-on farm experience at Eden’s Way Farm Sanctuary for eleven Maverick Supportive Recovery and Career Development program participants. Supported by the Government of Canada and the Province of BC, the Links to Employment initiative helps job seekers with persistent and multiple barriers reach their goals of obtaining meaningful training, volunteer work, and/or employment.

A Hands-On Farm Experience: Building Connections with Nature and Community

Participants took part in a variety of farm chores that connected them with nature. From cleaning out the rabbit enclosure to collecting manure from the goat fields, the group worked together to help maintain the sanctuary's grounds. They also filled hay baskets to feed the horses and other farm animals, looking closely at what it takes to care for them. After completing their tasks, participants were given a tour of Eden’s Way Farm Sanctuary where they had the chance to meet and interact with a wide variety of animals, including goats, cows, sheep, pigs, rabbits, geese, and farm dogs. This personal connection with the animals provided a therapeutic and rewarding experience for everyone involved, fostering a sense of calm and accomplishment.

The Healing Power of Nature and Animals: A Boost for Mental Health

Research shows that spending time in nature and interacting with animals can significantly enhance mental well-being. Engaging with animals can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, promoting emotional stability and resilience. For many, this opportunity was not just a day away from their usual routine but a chance to feel like they are a part of something larger, contributing to a cause that helps animals and promotes compassion. Furthermore, activities in natural settings foster mindfulness, allowing participants to connect with the present moment. This immersive experience at Eden’s Way Farm Sanctuary not only provided therapeutic benefits but also created lasting memories.

Participant Reflections: A Day Worth Remembering

The visit to Eden’s Way Farm Sanctuary was more than a volunteer activity. It was an opportunity for growth, connection, and reflection. Participants spoke about their experiences for days afterward. There is high anticipation for the next two scheduled trips in October and November, with many participants already signed up and eager to return.

"Thank you, Eden's Way Farm Sanctuary, I absolutely loved this day and I cannot wait to go back!"

"This was so worthwhile and rewarding, thank you for having us."

We are excited to continue fostering this partnership and look forward to more inspiring days of caring in the future. For more information on Eden's Way Farm Sanctuary, visit https://edenswayfarmsanctuary.ca.
