ASK Wellness Society, in partnership with BC Housing and the Access Hub Leadership Group, is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated opening of the Pathways at 142 Tranquille Road in Kamloops.

RELEASE DATE- January 24, 2025

Kamloops BC – ASK Wellness Society, in partnership with BC Housing and the Access Hub Leadership Group, is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated opening of the Pathways at 142 Tranquille Road in Kamloops. This 44-bed, 24/7 shelter and access hub is part of the Province’s commitment to addressing homelessness through the Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH) program. Pathways is anticipating the welcoming of guests through a gradual entry process to build up to capacity, starting on January 27th, 2025.

The vision for Pathways is rooted in a strong foundation of community collaboration, with its planning and development guided by the Access Hub Leadership Group. This collective, which includes representatives from local social service organizations, Indigenous partners, health care providers, and housing advocates, was instrumental in shaping the strategy and vision for the Access Hub model. The goal of this approach was to create a centralized and integrated space where individuals experiencing homelessness can access shelter and critical resources in a way that prioritizes dignity, inclusivity, and long-term support.

Renovations to transform the former commercial space into a safe and welcoming facility are near completion. Key upgrades include:

• Addition of amenity spaces, laundry, and storage facilities.
• Installation of controlled access, enhanced lighting, and security cameras.
• Upgrades to the fire life safety system.
• A fully equipped on-site food truck that will be offering three meals per day.

ASK Wellness Society will operate the program, providing vital services such as shelter, laundry, and meal services, housing support, health care access, and community resources for individuals experiencing homelessness in Kamloops. There is a particular focus on supporting identified community members in need from the North Shore neighbourhood, wherever possible. There will be a minimum of three employees on-site at any given time, and all staffing positions have now been filled.

As part of its preparation for Pathway’s opening, ASK Wellness Society completed extensive community engagement with surrounding businesses to address concerns and gather feedback. Additionally, the RCMP conducted a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) analysis of the building and surrounding area to ensure the safety of guests, staff, and neighbours. To foster transparency and community connection, select collaborative partners will be invited to tour the space prior to opening the doors to registered guests.

"Pathways represents an important connection between the Society’s street outreach services and our wide range of housing programs, enhancing safety and dignity for those in need," said Bob Hughes, Executive Officer at ASK Wellness Society. "With this new facility, we continue our mission to empower individuals and contribute to a healthier community."

The City of Kamloops approved a Temporary Use Permit for the site in late November 2024, underscoring its commitment to addressing housing challenges. The addition of Pathways’ 44 shelter beds builds upon the existing network of over 200 shelter beds already operating in Kamloops.

ASK Wellness Society and BC Housing are committed to fostering strong relationships with the community and ensuring the health and safety of guests, staff, and neighbours.
