2024 AIDS Walk: 34,000 Steps for Change

On October 4th, 2024, ASK Wellness Society’s Health Navigation team, alongside the amazing Cookie Reimer, hosted the annual AIDS Walk. This powerful event brought together staff and community members in solidarity to raise awareness and provide support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. The annual event also serves as a chance to walk in memoriam of those lost to HIV/AIDS.

Raising Awareness for HIV/AIDS

Since its founding as the AIDS Society of Kamloops (now ASK Wellness Society), the Society has been deeply rooted in advocating for and supporting individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. This year’s AIDS Walk was another significant milestone in these ongoing efforts. Participants, staff, and community advocates all shared a common goal: creating a future where HIV/AIDS is no longer shrouded in stigma and where everyone has access to the care that they need.

Together, we took 34,000 steps, symbolizing the steps that have been taken towards medical and educational enhancements, as well as the distance that we have come. The walk began in the back alley of 433 Tranquille with a loop back at Spero House, marking a meaningful route through our North Shore community.

A Day of Unity and Hope - and Homemade Pickles!

This year’s walk was filled with unity, hope, and an unwavering sense of purpose. From start to finish, the event featured meaningful conversations, supportive cheers, and moments of reflection as we honoured those lost to HIV/AIDS, including individuals personally connected to the folks in attendance.

After the walk, approximately 75 people gathered for a community BBQ with burgers, complemented by homemade pickles and relish lovingly prepared by Cookie herself. Cookie is a long-standing advocate and nurturer for people living with HIV/AIDS in our community and has been with us since the Society’s inception. She was there for the Society’s first AIDS Walk in September 1992 and has only missed one walk since due to personal health reasons.

Thank You for Walking with Us

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the incredible individuals who joined us for the 2024 AIDS Walk. Whether you walked, donated, cheered us on from afar, or helped serve during the BBQ, your involvement made a difference. Special thanks to Cookie Reimer and Elisha Noyes for their outstanding passion and commitment to making the day a success.

Let’s continue working together to advocate for those living with HIV/AIDS and support one another in building a more compassionate and inclusive community.
